Cisco zone Based Firewall

Zone based firewalls

New concept to introduced stateful packet inspection in routers after CBAC

Any two interfaces in same zone can transfer traffic
And two interfaces not in any security zone can share traffic
but zone 1 and Zone two intrefaces cannot share traffic untill unless we do the foloowing

1. create zone pair
2. create service policy whihc traffic to allow through

we use same old MQC framework class map and policy map and service policy

an additional thing is Paramater Map

to apply policy map

class-map type inspect match all CMAP_TCP
match protocol TCP
match access group 999
!

parapameter-map type inspect myparams
audit-trail on
max-incomplete high 1000
!

policy-map type inspect PMAP_OUT
class type inspect CMAP_TCP
inspcect myparams
!

zone security INSIDE
zone security OUTSIDE

interface fa0/0
zone-member security INSIDE

interface fa0/1
zone-member security OUTSIDE

zone-pair security OUTBOUND INSIDE dest OUTSIDE
service-policy type inspect PMAP_OUT

So finally all tcp and access list 999 traffic will make

Troubleshooting
sh zone security
sh zone-pair security
show policy-map type inspect zone-pair sessions
show class-map type inspect

Blocking SkyPe

Skype is a software that allows users to make calls to users free, along with instant messaging , file transfer , videoconferencing. Skype is P2P VOIP client software. Skype claims that it provides better voice quality however it also encrypts calls.

There are 2 types of nodes in the Skype network
1. Skype Client or Ordinary Host (OH)
2. Super Node (SN)

OH is the computer having application installed and connected to the inetrent network to communicate with other users however SN is the connecting point or endpoint of OH . In short OH connect SN , Super Nodes computer is connected with login server to authenticate the username password of the client. SN servers are located in different parts of world , OH maintains contains the list of IP addresses of corresponding SN and is stored in registry
An interesting thing about the Skype network is that it when ever you install the application your computer become a Super Node with out knowing and amazingly this doesn’t impact the performance of your computer as well.

Skype routes the traffic intelligently by choosing the optimum PATCH AND IT uses both TCP or UDP protocol, it breaks the data stream into separate packets, which can take different paths as being optimal path to the destination, and finally assemble whole stream of data. skype comes with several build-in addresses of different nodes, called bootstrap super nodes. When skype connects to an SN, it receives an updated list of other active SNs in this way it has the most current information.Skype application does not include any adware or spyware however some third parties have managed to add such functionalities so it is important that you download it from the right place.

However in office network to block Skype or other P2P and IM software is the important requirements , or the part of security policy here we are going to discuss how to block Skype in Cisco firewall because by blocking a single port or protocol don’t fulfil your requirements
In this regards Cisco introduces skype classification in NBAR first time in 12.4(4)T IOS version , with this policy you can block skype and in the same way you can block or limit kasa , Emule, Limewire as will this is what known as application awareness

Configuring NBAR to drop Skype packets

#class−map match−any p2p

#match protocol skype

#policy−map block−p2p

#class p2p

#drop (action of dropping paket that match the above policy)

#interface FastEthernet 0

#description Outside

#service−policy input block−p2p (applying policy on the interface)

However you can use NBAR to identify or discover top usage protocols in your network , but the disadvantage of using Nbar in the box is high CPU utilization if you are terminating VPN sessions and Nbar on the same box it will degrade the performance so you have to do some math work in your mind before deployment

#ip nbar protocol-discovery.

Q. Can We block Skype with Cisco ASA/PIX ?

Unfortunately, the PIX/ASA is not able to block the skype traffic. Skype has the capacity to negotiate dynamic ports and to use encrypted traffic. With encrypted traffic, it is virtually impossible to detect it as there are no patterns to look for.

You could eventually use a Cisco IPS (Intrusion Prevention System). It has some signatures that are able to detect a Windows Skype Client that connects to the Skype server to synchronize its version. This is usually done when the client is initiated the connection. When the sensor picks up the initial Skype connection, you can be able to find the person who use the service, and block all connections initiated from their IP address.

Update : - 12 Jan 2010

Skype uses an aggressive adaptive networking application that is designed to reach the Internet at all costs. Skype sessions use an asymmetric key exchange to distribute the 256 bit symmetric key employed by the AES cipher for session encryption. Skype's initial outbound connection can use any dynamic combination of TCP and UDP ports, including outbound ports 80 and 443 which are generally open for HTTP and HTTPS access. This renders traditional port blocking filters completely ineffective. In addition, Skype uses proprietary methods of NAT traversal similar to STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP the NAT), ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) and TURN (Traversal Using Relay NAT) to ensure that you can reach the Internet and to determine the client's eligibility to be a supernode.

ASA with the AIP (IPS/Anti-X) module have even better protection and control over IM and P2P applications (as well as many other threats - including many application layer attacks). Not only can you specify more granular policies, like "allow users to chat over IM, but not perform file transfers." AIP also detects many more IM and P2P apps than PIX, and AIP also supports dynamic signature updating to adapt to new P2P/IM applications very quickly. I would have to say that this is my preferred method even though it requires an investment. Here are just some of the threats that AIP can protect from:

Peer-to-peer: KaZaA, BitTorrent, Skype, WinMX, eDonkey, Bearshare, Soulseek, Limewire, etc.

Instant Messaging: AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, etc.

Worms: Slammer, Blaster, Witty, Code Red, NIMDA, etc.

Backdoors: Subseven, Trinoo, Back Orifice, Netspy, etc.

Directed attacks: Buffer overflows, SQL injection, shell/command execution, stack/heap attacks, etc.

You can find out more about AIP in the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/ps6825/index.html

But there is something we can try,it is just a matter of blocking the communication to the logging server, it looks like when you launch Skype it does a DNS lookup for ui.skype.com. So basically, verify the IP address with a nslookup and then add an ACL to block communication for login.

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: ui.skype.com

Address: 204.9.163.158

So you can create an access-list to block outgoing dns requests to

204.9.163.158 and let me know if that works.

Otherwise this should be configured in the IPS module directly.

Choosing the best firewall..??

Firewall is the most critical part of any network and it plays an important role in the security of network. Before selecting any firewall you should have to check and get the appropriate answers of these critical questions, which will help a lot in selecting an appropriate firewall defending your network as a perimeter line of defense against the attacks.but the most important thing is that your business need and your organizations security policy which drives you to purchase the firewall and then finally is your part selecting best firewall in the world

1) Any type of application awareness does your firewall support?
2) Is your firewall really a state full and it can watch UDP Sessions as well?
3) Dose this firewall watch application level traffic? As it can see an FTP, TFTP, HTTP session and limit FTP commands can be used?
4) Dose that firewall have capability to stop or defend against web attacks like cross site scripting?
5) Dose your firewall provides Intrusion prevention?
6) Reporting options available in the firewall?
7) Can this firewall capable to detect and block P2P (peer to peer) applications?
8) Firewall product protect from VPN attacks?
9) Protection against TCP based traffic?
10) Protecting against rapid scanning events i.e. spoofing, scanning , brute force?
11) DOS and DDOS protection?
12) Any protection at application level for HTTP, SMTP, POP3, HTTPS applications?
13) Any type of protection for DNS, Microsoft Network System, instant messaging and VOIP?
14) any protection at web application level, in which your product run scripts in a safe environment to determine if the code is malicious before allowing the user to execute it?
15) Dose this product offer contact filtering based upon URL's?
16) VPN options supported by the device like site to site, remote access, SSL?
17) How fast the patches are updated in the case of identification of vulnerability?
18) Check the performance data from the data sheets, and any test reports?
19) I/O interfaces option (that depends upon your requirement?

CISCO Firewall (PIX and ASA)

A firewall is the guarantee of a secure network. In order to provide reliable security firewall security itself is a primary concern in this regard there are multiple solutions being offered by Cisco , However Firewall security becomes a transparent, scalable, and manageable aspect of the business infrastructure.
The new product introduces by cisco a couple of years back replacing PIX and is ASA. Adaptive Security Algorithm is used by the PIX/ASA security appliances for stateful application inspection and facilitates to secure use of applications and services. Some applications require special handling by the security appliance and specific application inspection engines are provided for this purpose.

Some of protocols supported by CISCO ASA application inspection is as under however it keeps on increasing day by day (I have tried my level best to identify every protocol):
FTP, SUN RPC, SQL*NET, SCCP, MGCP, Exchange, NetShow, VDOLive, GTP (3G Wireless), CTIQBE, PPTP, RSH, SIP, H.323,NAT/PAT of DNS, FTP, ICMP, ESP-IKE, ILS, SIP, X Display, SCCP (Skinny), RTSP, TAPI/JAPI.

Cisco Firewall watches application-level traffic. In the case of FTP it will inspects the FTP sessions and performs preparation of dynamic secondary data connection than Tracks FTP command-response sequence , produces audit trail and finally NAT embedded IP address

PIX/ASA is truly stateful firewall with rich application and protocol inspection including UDP. In order to monitor the state of UDP conversations, the PIX /ASA supports the stateful failover protocols: IPSec, IKE , All TCP, All UDP

Intrusion prevention module in the ASA is both signature and pattern based, this IPS module can also use the Meta Event Generator to determine if certain behaviors are undesired and make an inline permit/deny action and can be integrated with different reporting and management systems .

PIX/ASA 7.0 provides visibility and control of Instant Messaging, Peer-to-Peer, and other tunneling applications (As GoToMyPC.com). in order to protect against the successive attacks like continous scan cisco ASA have a great command # ip verify reverse path , beside this you can limit embryonic connections both TCP and UDP to avoid DOS attack

HTTP inspection provides some additional facilities

  • Validate that the content-type passed in the response message is one of those listed in the request message’s accept-type field.
  • Allow or disallow non-http traffic on port-80 (all or none).
  • Allow or disallow peer-to-peer networks: emule, limewire Kazaa
  • Allow or disallow Instant Messengers : Yahoo, MSN, AOL
  • Configure the minimum and maximum size of an http message body.
  • Configure maximum URL length
  • Configure permissible transfer encoding methods
  • Verify that the content-type specified in the header is the same as that being passed in the body of the http message.

DNS attacks are more command now a days so DNS query inspection in cisco PIX /ASA which tears down the DNS session associated with a DNS query as soon as the DNS reply is forwarded by the security appliance. DNS guard also monitors the message exchange to verify that the ID of the DNS reply matches the ID of the DNS query

Cisco Firewall supports main features that provides protection

1. Firewall (application awareness , Statefull inspection)
2. Unified communication Security
3. SSL/IPSec VPN
4. Intrusion prevention
5. Content Security

Summarized Data Sheet of Cisco ASA appliance is as under:--
